CoolTrad, c’est le troisième album que Nicolas Boulerice crée en duo avec son fidèle acolyte Frédéric Samson. En marge des tendances actuelles de la musique traditionnelle québécoise, CoolTrad est un projet qui met de l’avant les textes et la poésie des anciens, soutenue par une musique empreinte de respect de la tradition, mais aussi prête à faire rayonner celle-ci dans de tout nouveaux contextes. Au menu : 12 chansons qui témoignent d’une certaine forme de lenteur et de mélancolie, douze rencontres aux frontières du jazz entre le rythme des mots et le swing.

Cool Trad is the third duo album by founding member of Le Vent du Nord, Nicolas Boulerice and his loyal collaborator and double bass player Frédéric Samson. In refreshing contrast to current trends in traditional Québécois music, Cool Trad is a project that brings to the fore writings and poetry from the past, accompanied by a music steeped in tradition, yet ready to embrace its new settings.

Cool Trad presents 12 songs that possess a gentle pace and melancholy; 12 encounters that feel jazz-like in the swing and rhythm of their lyrics. It represents a constant dialogue between the trad repertoire and its two protagonists who take their inspiration from cool jazz and the beatnik movement of the 1950s. The pulse of Cool Trad is calmer, the emotion clearly evident, stories are very much at the heart of these interpretations and the repertoire is embedded in North America’s oral tradition, lying somewhere between improvisation and thoughtful arrangements, slam and a traditional jig…
